Basic Principles of Cat Training
- Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward desired behaviors with treats, praise, or playtime. Never punish your cat, as this can cause fear and damage your bond.
- Keep Sessions Short: Cats have short attention spans. Aim for 5-10 minute training sessions.
- Be Patient and Consistent: Training takes time. Use the same commands and rewards consistently.
- Train Before Meals: Your cat will be more motivated by treats if they are a little hungry.
Useful Training Commands
- Come: Say your cat’s name followed by ‘come’. Reward them when they approach you.
- Sit: Hold a treat above their head. As they look up, their bottom will naturally lower. Say ‘sit’ and give them the treat.
- Target Training: Teach your cat to touch a target stick or your hand with their nose. This is a foundational skill for more complex tricks.
Litter Box Training
Most cats instinctively use a litter box. Ensure it is clean, placed in a quiet location, and that you have one more litter box than the number of cats in your home.
Discouraging Unwanted Behavior
- Scratching Furniture: Provide appealing scratching posts and use catnip to attract your cat to them.
- Jumping on Counters: Use double-sided tape or aluminum foil on surfaces, as cats dislike the feel. Provide them with approved high places, like a cat tree.
