Easy Methods to Make Buttermilk at Home
Buttermilk is simple to make with common kitchen ingredients. Here are the most popular methods:
Method 1: Milk and Lemon Juice or Vinegar (Most Common)
- Measure: Pour 1 cup of milk into a measuring cup.
- Acidify: Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice OR white vinegar to the milk.
- Stir and Wait: Stir gently and let the mixture sit at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes. It will curdle and thicken slightly.
- Use: Your buttermilk is ready to use in recipes.
Method 2: Milk and Cream of Tartar
- Combine: Mix 1 cup of milk with 1 ¾ teaspoons of cream of tartar.
- Whisk: Whisk vigorously until well combined and slightly thickened.
Important Note: For all methods, whole milk works best, but low-fat milk can also be used. This substitute works perfectly for baking pancakes, biscuits, and cakes.
