Step-by-Step Guide to Checking Engine Oil
- Park on a Level Surface and Turn Off the Engine: Ensure the car is parked on flat ground and the engine has been off for at least 5-10 minutes to allow the oil to settle in the oil pan.
- Open the Hood: Locate and release the hood latch inside your car, then go to the front and fully open and secure the hood.
- Locate the Dipstick: Find the engine oil dipstick. It usually has a brightly colored handle (often yellow or orange) labeled ‘Engine Oil’.
- Pull Out and Wipe the Dipstick: Pull the dipstick all the way out. Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe it clean.
- Re-insert and Remove the Dipstick: Push the dipstick fully back in, then pull it out again immediately to get an accurate reading.
- Check the Oil Level: Look at the end of the dipstick. There will be two marks or a cross-hatched area. The oil level should be between the ‘Min’ and ‘Max’ (or ‘Add’ and ‘Full’) marks. If it’s at or below the minimum mark, you need to add oil.
- Inspect the Oil’s Condition: Note the oil’s color and consistency. It should be amber or brown and relatively smooth. If it’s very dark, gritty, or has a milky appearance, it may be time for an oil change or indicate a problem.
- Re-insert the Dipstick: Once you have finished checking, securely push the dipstick all the way back in.
Additional Tips
- Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the specific type of oil recommended for your car.
- It’s best to check your oil regularly, such as once a month or before a long trip.
- If you need to add oil, do so a little at a time to avoid overfilling.
