Step-by-Step Guide to Checking Engine Oil

  1. Park on a Level Surface and Turn Off the Engine: Ensure the car is parked on flat ground and the engine has been off for at least 5-10 minutes to allow the oil to settle in the oil pan.
  2. Open the Hood: Locate and release the hood latch inside your car, then go to the front and fully open and secure the hood.
  3. Locate the Dipstick: Find the engine oil dipstick. It usually has a brightly colored handle (often yellow or orange) labeled ‘Engine Oil’.
  4. Pull Out and Wipe the Dipstick: Pull the dipstick all the way out. Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe it clean.
  5. Re-insert and Remove the Dipstick: Push the dipstick fully back in, then pull it out again immediately to get an accurate reading.
  6. Check the Oil Level: Look at the end of the dipstick. There will be two marks or a cross-hatched area. The oil level should be between the ‘Min’ and ‘Max’ (or ‘Add’ and ‘Full’) marks. If it’s at or below the minimum mark, you need to add oil.
  7. Inspect the Oil’s Condition: Note the oil’s color and consistency. It should be amber or brown and relatively smooth. If it’s very dark, gritty, or has a milky appearance, it may be time for an oil change or indicate a problem.
  8. Re-insert the Dipstick: Once you have finished checking, securely push the dipstick all the way back in.

Additional Tips

  • Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the specific type of oil recommended for your car.
  • It’s best to check your oil regularly, such as once a month or before a long trip.
  • If you need to add oil, do so a little at a time to avoid overfilling.
