Understanding GPA Calculation
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by converting your letter grades into numerical values, multiplying by the credit hours for each course, summing these values, and then dividing by the total credit hours attempted.
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Convert letter grades to grade points using your school’s scale (common 4.0 scale):
- A = 4.0
- B = 3.0
- C = 2.0
- D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
- Multiply grade points by credit hours for each course
- Sum all quality points (grade points × credit hours)
- Divide total quality points by total credit hours attempted
Example Calculation
If you took:
– Math (3 credits): A (4.0)
– History (3 credits): B (3.0)
– Science (4 credits): B (3.0)
Calculation:
Quality Points = (3 × 4.0) + (3 × 3.0) + (4 × 3.0) = 12 + 9 + 12 = 33
Total Credits = 3 + 3 + 4 = 10
GPA = 33 ÷ 10 = 3.3
