Step-by-Step Guide to Unclog a Toilet
- Stop the water flow: If the water is rising, quickly remove the tank lid and lift the flapper to stop more water from entering the bowl. If necessary, turn off the water supply valve located at the base of the toilet.
- Prepare your tools: Use a plunger with a flange (designed for toilets) for best results. Ensure there is enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger’s cup.
- Plunge effectively: Insert the plunger into the drain opening at an angle to trap air. Push down gently at first to force out the air, then plunge vigorously up and down 10-15 times while maintaining a tight seal.
- Check for success: Flush the toilet to see if the clog has cleared. If the water drains normally, you’re done. If not, repeat the plunging process.
- Alternative method – toilet auger: If plunging fails, insert a toilet auger (closet auger) into the drain and crank the handle to break up or retrieve the obstruction.
- Prevent future clogs: Avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper and human waste. Consider using less toilet paper per flush.
What Not to Do
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners as they can damage pipes and are ineffective on toilet clogs.
- Do not flush repeatedly if the bowl is full – this will cause overflow.
- Do not use a regular sink plunger – toilet plungers have an extended flange for better seal.
