Effective Methods to Stop Hiccups

Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. Here are some common remedies:

  1. Hold your breath: Take a deep breath and hold it for 10-20 seconds, then exhale slowly.
  2. Drink cold water: Sip a glass of cold water quickly or gargle with ice water.
  3. Use the paper towel method: Place a single layer of paper towel over a glass of water and drink through it, requiring suction.
  4. Breathe into a paper bag: This increases carbon dioxide levels, which may help relax the diaphragm.
  5. Eat a spoonful of sugar or honey: The granular texture may stimulate the vagus nerve.
  6. Pull on your tongue: Gently pull your tongue forward to stimulate nerves and muscles.

If hiccups persist for more than 48 hours, consult a healthcare professional as it could indicate an underlying medical condition.
